The PRACTICAL Radiation Safety Officer Training Course is an in-depth 3-day course designed for individuals with responsibilities as a Radiation Safety Officer working in a medical (Nuclear Medicine), commercial or  laboratory  environments. This unique course provides participants with practical applications to meet CNSC, provincial regulatory requirements while dealing with radioactive materials or medical patients.

This course is beneficial to institutions seeking accreditation by providing comprehensive training and certificates to its Radiation Safety Officers.

The course has been approved both by CAMRT and by the Canadian Radiation Protection Association and follows the core competencies (excluding Class 7 TDG requirements) outlined for the Registered Radiation Safety Professional national examination to achieve the CRPA(R) designation. The course is also beneficial for those individuals wishing to write the examination and achieve the CRPA(R) designation.

The Radiation Safety Officer Training Course goes beyond textbooks. Taught by an experienced RSO, the course is designed to meet the current administrative and technical challenges in implementing a radiation safety program to meet CNSC requirements. Course tools allow participants to develop and maintain excellence in radiation safety program at their own facilities.

Class discussions and exercises supplement training material. Much class time is devoted to practical scenarios.  Participants will receive a training certificate for the RSO course.

Who should participate?

This course is ideal for professionals working with nuclear sealed and unsealed sources in hospitals, diagnostic imaging, laboratory environments, research environments, commercial applications or anyone requiring additional knowledge of a Radiation Safety Officer. A certificate will be issued to participants who successfully complete the course.

Course Instructor

Joe Cortese, BSc (Physics), CRPA(R) is an experienced RSO, formerly from BC Cancer Agency and now a highly sought after educator in radiation safety in Canada.   His training courses consistently receive high ratings and excellent reviews.  Joe has been designated an Industry Services trainer for Radiation Safety Officer Courses and Transportation of Dangerous Goods-Radioactive Materials. He has provided instruction of radiation safety to nuclear medicine departments, cancer care centers, clinical genetics, biotechology, radiation therapy, fire departments, commercial sector, research facilities, universities and occupational health and safety sectors.

Joe is a Registered Radiation Safety Professional with the Canadian Radiation Protection Association.

Minimum Computer Requirements to Received Video Feed:

Desktop or laptop with camera, fast network connection (not dial-up) and 1 GB of RAM with a dual core processor for 360p resolution or for 720 resolution 2 GB of RAM with a quad core processor.  Log in information will be provided to course participants after registration.

Course notes provided to all participants registered by August 28, 2020.  For later registrations, we cannot guarantee deliver of course notes in time of course start date.

Course Cancellation Policy

Substitutions are welcomed at any time at no charge. Full refund up to 3 weeks prior to course.  If course is cancelled by registrant less 2 weeks before the course, a $100 fee will be assessed and balance of fee refunded.  If course is a course is cancelled by a registrant 7 days before the course, no refund will be issued.  Any course cancellation by KRMC will result in a full refund to participants.
